Map of Lookout Mountain, [1863 or 1864].

Map, 1863 or 1864, of the Lookout Mountain area in Ga. and Ala. Drawn by Capt. S. W. Steele, it depicts transportation routes through the mountain range on a 1" = 2 miles scale. Rivers and creeks are represented in blue pencil which has been partially rubbed out over the years. Mountains are depicted in black ink, while roads are depicted in red ink. Mountain gaps are indicated by their names. The map shows some landmarks mentioned in Wheeler's 1863-1864 reports, such as Blue Pond Gap, Neal's Gap, Dug Gap, Ringgold, LaFayette, and Rossville. Some of the waterways on the map are the Tennessee River, the Coosa River, the Chatooga River, Black Creek, and Big Will's Creek. Other landmarks noted on the map include the Round Mountain Iron Works, Shin Bone Valley, Blue Bird Gap, Henderson's Gap, Chattanooga, Trenton (Ga.), and Lebanon (Ala.).

Captain S. W. Steele was a Confederate engineer who served under General Braxton Bragg during the first two years of the Civil War. In 1863 he was transferred to serve under the command of Major General Joseph Wheeler where he remained until the end of the war. Under Wheeler he participated in raids throughout Ga. and Tenn. and saw action at Chickamauga, Knoxville, Missionary Ridge, Ringgold (Ga.), Dalton (Ga.), Resaca (Ga.), and Bentonville (N. C.).
